Most of the pieces where designed to run from a hard disk, although where practical they have been optimized for playback from CD-ROM. Because of the diversity of the pieces╒ technical requirements, we cannot guarantee that all of them will work on your system or that they are error-free. Special requirements are noted in the ╥About╙ files accompanying each piece. As a minimum, however, we recommend the following:
Ñ A color-capable Mac OS computer
Ñ At least 8 Mbytes of installed RAM (5,000K free)
Ñ A 13-inch (640x480) or larger color monitor
Ñ A double-speed CD-ROM drive
Ñ System 7
SETTING UP
These instructions assume a basic familiarity with Macintosh interface conventions. If you╒re just getting started with your computer, and find the operations described below confusing, please refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
Many of the pieces require one or more of the system extensions provided on NVNV ╒94 CD 1. To install the extensions, follow these steps:
1. Open the System Extensions folder on NVNV ╒94 CD 1.
2. If you don╒t already have these extensions installed, or are unsure, drag the appropriate icons one-by-one to your System Folder icon and drop them. The Macintosh will guide you through the rest of the installation. If you install any extensions, restart your computer to make them active.
If you are using System Software version 7.5 (or 7.5.1), we recommend that you turn off the ╥Remember recently used items╙ option in your Apple Menu Options control panel. This option can interfere with a feature of the Finder we╒re using for these discs. See ╥How come it keeps asking me to put in the other CD?╙, below, for more information.
GETTING STARTED
Copy the ╥NVNV Contents╙ folder on CD 1 to your hard disk or desktop.
The NVNV Contents folder contains aliases to all of the contest entries, which are divided across the 2 CDs. When you double-click an alias for an entry, you will be prompted to insert the right CD (if it╒s not in the drive already), and the piece╒s window will open. In most cases, you can simply double-click the icon bearing the piece╒s name to begin. See the ╥About╙ file for the author╒s original notes on his or her piece for special instructions, but bear in mind that many technical details in these files may no longer be accurate.
How come it keeps asking me to put in the other CD?
Because the pieces are divided across 2 CDs, some disc-swapping is in order. But if you get pestered excessively to insert the other CD, turn off ╥Remember recently used items╙ in the Apple Menu Options control panel. System Software 7.5 introduced this control panel. Unfortunately, it can interfere with a feature of the Finder we╒re using to present the pieces across the 2 discs as seamlessly as possible. The ╥Remember recently used items╙ option can also slow down your computer somewhat, so you may wish to disable it in any case. If the problem persists, manually empty the ╥Recent Documents╙ and ╥Recent Applications╙ folders in your Apple Menu Items folder.
If you choose not to disable this option, you can still access all of the pieces on the CDs manually, without using the aliases in the NVNV Contents folder. Refer to the ╥Disc Index╙ file in the NVNV Contents folder to find out where each piece is located.
